Alberta Juniors
The Alberta Junior Handling Zone has been under the guidance of Shannon Scheer for the past 17 years.
We have been involved in many fund raising events to help not only our Junior division, but also charitable organizations.
Each year our Provincial Finalist has their airfare and hotel accomodations paid for by the Alberta Juniors hard work through out the year. This enables the child and a chaperone to attend the Canadian Junior National Championships, which roves through out Canada on a yearly basis.
Our entry level at Junior Competitions in Alberta is very high and we have a very active Juniors membership. Currently we are working towards having more children compete at the Jr Obedience level as well. It is our hopes that Alberta will be able to send a qualifier to the 2009 Jr Obedience National as well.
Calgary based Junior Handling classes are held Saturday afternoon at Showline Distributing on Glenmore Trail SE. These classes are taught by Loren Bressers who can be contacted at wagswell@yahoo.net for more information. Classes run for a duration of 8 wks. Loren is now working with local 4-H children on Saturdays as well.
Over the years, our Alberta Juniors Program has raised funds close to $5,000 for charitable organizations. The children work hard at selling raffle tickets, silent auctions, gift baskets, bake sales, fun matches ect. In return for our sponsored all breed club donations, our Juniors can be found working hospitality at the shows, being on clean up detail, sweeping and washing matts in the evening and help to do set up at the summer AKC shows.
Our fund raising has been used towards the following organizations:
- Children's Wish Society
- BSL
- The Katrina Hurricane Animal Fund
- Take The Lead
- Provincial Finals competition
- National Junior Championship
- Alberta Guide Dog Association
"The Alberta Juniors are now working towards sponsoring a new guide dog puppy. "Tucker" graduated and is now placed with a seventeen year old girl in Calgary.
The Alberta Provincial Junior Handling Finals will be held July 31, 2010 in conjunction with the AKC shows at Spruce Meadows. Obedience and Conformation are offered.
The Canadian National 2010 Junior Handling Championships are being held in Calgary, Alberta, Nov 27th, 2010. This is in conjunction with the Calgary Kennel and Obedience Club. Twenty Two children from across Canada will be here to compete for Conformation and Obedience.
